Sam Houghton Mountain Bike Challenge

Six engineers from R G Parkins & Partners and Inter Hydro Technology took part in this year's Sam Houghton Mountain Bike Challenge. In this photo (from left to right): Dave Bond, Geoff Graham, Clare de Villanueva, George Hartley and Jon Freeman.

The challenge is a timed mountain bike ride starting and finishing at the Mill Yard, Staveley. The route covers the Longsleddale, Kentmere and Troutbeck valleys, taking in the steep and rocky Garburn Pass. It is organised in memory of Sam Houghton, a keen mountain biker who sadly lost his battle against cancer and died aged only 22 in May 2006. All proceeds from the event are donated to Cancer Research UK.

The 2011 event was a great success with a record number of riders enjoying the sunshine. The route was 30 miles long and involved 1400m of ascent! Nic Smith was our fastest rider and came in at 2 hours 44 minutes (too quick to be photographed); Dave Bond, Jon Freeman, George Hartley and Geoff Graham won the team category in 3 hours 24 minutes and Clare de Villanueva finished in 5 hours 10 minutes.

Well done to everyone who took part and thanks to those that helped organise the event. For more information, results and photos, visit the website www.samhoughtonchallenge.co.uk
